Here are our top 5 do’s and don’ts of creating workplace quizzes…

  1. Purpose & Audience

  • What’s the goal? Is it for team building, knowledge assessment, icebreaker, etc.? This dictates the tone, content, and difficulty.
  • Who’s taking it? Consider their background, interests, and knowledge levels. Tailor questions accordingly.
  • How will it be administered? In-person with a supervisor, self-paced online, team-based, or individual?
  1. Content & Format

  • Theme: A central theme makes the quiz more focused and engaging (e.g., company trivia, industry knowledge, pop culture).
  • Question Types: Mix it up! Use text-based and image-based multiple choice and true/false questions.
  • Question Difficulty: A good balance is key. Include some easy wins, some challenging questions, and a few brain teasers.
  • Number of Questions: Keep it concise to maintain interest. Aim for 5-15 questions, depending on the format and time constraints.
  • Answer Clarity: Ensure questions are clear, unambiguous, and have one definitive correct answer.
  1. Engagement & Fun

  • Make it relevant: Include company-specific trivia, inside jokes, or industry-related questions.
  • Add humor: Inject lightheartedness and personality into the questions.
  • Use visuals: Images or animated GIFs can make the quiz more engaging.
  • Offer incentives: Prizes or recognition can motivate participation.
  1. Logistics & Fairness

  • Time limits: Set reasonable time limits for each question or the overall quiz.
  • Scoring: Decide how points will be awarded and how ties will be handled.
  • Accessibility: Ensure the quiz is accessible to everyone, considering different abilities or language barriers.
  • Platform: Decide how your team will complete the Way We Do quiz on desktop, tablet devices or smart phones.
  1. Legal & Ethical Considerations

  • Avoid sensitive topics: Steer clear of questions related to politics, religion, or personal beliefs.
  • Ensure privacy: If collecting personal information, be transparent about how it will be used and protect confidentiality.
  • Copyright: Use images and content legally. If using copyrighted material, obtain necessary permissions.

Who is responsible for creating quizzes in the workplace?

There isn’t one definitive answer, as it can vary depending on the company size, structure, and the purpose of the quiz.

Often, Human Resources (HR) takes the lead, as they frequently manage employee engagement activities, training, and onboarding — all areas where quizzes can shine. For example, HR might design quizzes to assess employee understanding of company policies or to foster team building.

Learning and Development (L&D) teams also play a key role. They focus on designing and delivering training programs, making quizzes a natural tool for assessing learning outcomes and reinforcing knowledge.  L&D might create quizzes to test comprehension after a training session or to track progress in a learning program.

Don’t overlook department managers and team leaders! They possess specific knowledge of their teams’ needs and can tailor quizzes accordingly. A sales manager, for instance, might create a quiz on product knowledge to ensure their team is up-to-speed.

Individual employees can also contribute. They might design quizzes for their colleagues as a fun, engaging way to share knowledge or boost morale.  Imagine a history buff creating a trivia quiz for their team during a lunch break!

Ultimately, the most effective quizzes often arise from collaboration.  HR might partner with L&D to create a comprehensive quiz for new hires covering company policies and job-specific knowledge. The key is to identify who has the necessary expertise, resources, and enthusiasm to create engaging and effective quizzes that meet the organization’s goals.

The Top 5 Workplace Quiz Topics

Workplace quizzes cover a wide range of topics, but some consistently rank among the most popular.

Company Policies and Procedures:

Company policies and procedures are a prime example, as quizzes effectively ensure that employees understand and adhere to essential guidelines. These quizzes might cover the code of conduct, safety regulations, data security protocols, and HR policies like leave and benefits.

Product Knowledge:

Product knowledge is another crucial area, especially for sales teams, customer service representatives, and anyone interacting with customers. These quizzes assess employees’ grasp of product features, benefits, pricing, target audience, and competitive advantages.

Skills Assessments:

Skills assessments are also common, helping to pinpoint employees’ strengths and weaknesses in specific areas. These might gauge software proficiency, technical skills, communication abilities, or problem-solving aptitude.

Training and Development:

Training and development programs frequently utilize quizzes to reinforce learning and evaluate program effectiveness. They can cover key concepts from training sessions, application of learned skills, knowledge retention, and areas needing further training.

Team Building and Engagement:

Finally, team building and engagement are often boosted through quizzes. These can be a fun and interactive way to foster camaraderie, with popular topics including general knowledge trivia, pop culture, company history, and personal interests. These diverse topics highlight how quizzes can serve both serious and lighthearted purposes in the workplace.
